Q1: What exactly do you guys do?

HazardHub builds geographic risk data sets for the entire United States. For any address, we’ll let you know the risk for a number of different hazards – things like your risk of flood, wildfires and a number of other risks.

Q2: What does “first third-generation” mean?

We come to the table with a whole lot of experience in building geographic risk data sets for commercial applications. In fact, this is the third time we’ve build these types of data sets. With each “generation” we get smarter about what we’re building. Smarter is better.

Q3: I live in California but don’t see a Storm Surge score. Why not?

While some risks - like flood - are present in every state, some risks are limited to specific geographic regions due to weather patterns in that region. For example, hurricanes occur in the Eastern and Southern US. If your state borders the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll see a Storm Surge score. If you’re on the west coast – where earthquakes are more common - you’ll see Tsunami risk instead.

Q4: Why are you doing this?

Our business got started due to a friend’s house unexpectedly flooding. While their home was not in a flood zone, it was right next to a flood zone and – according to our calculations – shows an elevated risk for flood. It would have been easy and relatively inexpensive to get a flood policy for their home. Instead, they lost tens of thousands of dollars of items to the flood.

At HazardHub we believe that everyone who owns a home or business should be aware of the risk around that home, so that they can prepare their property as well as possible. Billions of dollars and dozens of lives are lost every year…losses that we’d like to see cut down. That’s why we GIVE you the scores around your home in exchange for your email address.

Q5: How do I know this is accurate?

We gather data from the most reliable sources available, including FEMA, NOAA, state and local governments, and a number of other data sources. While no system is fool-proof, we do our best to provide the most accurate data possible.

Q6: So what’s in it for HazardHub?

Our main mission is information – we think everyone should know the risks around their property. It’s that important.

We’ll ask for your email address. We’ll also ask if you want to get a competitive homeowner insurance quote from our network of insurance agents and carriers. We’ll pass them the information about your property, so they’ll be able to help you get the right insurance from the right carrier for your property.

Q7: I’m interested in having your data in my application. Do you have an API?

We’re very interested in building a vibrant partner community for HazardHub. We’ve developed a REST-based API that pulls in all of our hazard data for you to utilize. Contact us and we’ll get you set up.

Q8: What else have you got planned?

One of our main goals is to constantly improve our existing hazard layers and to add hazard layers that are not yet commercially available. We’ve got a LOT planned for 2017 that we’re super-excited about. So stay tuned!
